Spaghetti with Mini Meatballs a Sunday Supper. This is a great go to recipe for family gatherings.  Everyone I know LOVES meatballs cooked in  tomato sauce, tossed with spaghetti, topped with parmeasn cheese, Delicious.  A classic American adaptation of an Italian recipe, some call it Sunday gravy with meatballs,  Bon Appetit Magazine even dedicated their October cover to this famous dish.  I like to think Spaghetti with Mini Meatballs  is ” The Italian American comfort food”.  There are so many recipes, so many ways to prepare Spaghetti with Mini Meatballs a Sunday Supper, here is one of mine.  Let’s Cook!

Spaghetti with Mini Meatballs a Sunday Supper

Spaghetti with mini meatballs is everyone's favorite, use a combination of ground beef and ground veal if you like.  Ask your butcher to grind the meat mixture twice

  • 2 lbs Ground veal or Ground beef, veal mixture Ask your butcher to grind the meat twice
  • 3 cloves Garlic minced or pressed
  • 10 large Basil leaves
  • 5-6 large Eggs
  • 3/4-1 cup Parmigiano Reggiano cheese grated
  • 3/4-1 cup Fine breadcrumbs
  • Sea salt (fine ground) to taste
  • Fresh ground pepper to taste
  • 3-4 tbls Extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 1/2-4 cups Tomato Sauce I use Mutti Passata di Pomodoro found at Italian Specialty Stores
  • 1 large Garlic clove crushed or diced
  • 1 1/2 tbls Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Pinch of Sugar
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Sea salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 lb Spaghetti, Imported
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese to taste


  1. For the Mini Meatballs:

    In a medium sized mixing bowl, add the ground meat, the cheese and the breadcrumbs

  2. Using either an immersion or conventional blender, mix the eggs, garlic, basil, salt and pepper.  Blend well until the basil is completely blended with the eggs

  3. Pour the blended mixture into the mixing bowl, mix well being careful not to overwork the meat.  If the mixture seems too wet to take the shape of a large ball adjust with breadcrumbs and/or parmesan cheese

  4. In a large non-stick skillet, add the olive oil heat the oil.  Roll the mini meatballs and add to the hot oil.  Gently brown the meatballs on all sides careful not to break then while turning, you want them to keep their little round shape.  When the meatballs are golden brown set aside, they will continue cooking in the tomato sauce 

  5. For the Simple Tomato Sauce:

    Add Olive oil and garlic, lightly brown the garlic and hot pepper flakes (optional).  Carefully add the tomato sauce, sugar salt and pepper.  Add the mini meatballs and their release pan juices, simmer for at least 15-20 minutes

  6. In a Pasta Pot, add cold water bring to rolling boil, add sea salt and the spaghetti, cook for 1 minute less than package indicates for al dente.  With a pasta fork, pick up the spaghetti, draining as you grab it from it's water carefully add the spaghetti to the meatball tomato sauce, gently, careful not to break the meatballs, mix the spaghetti and sauce, add grated parmesan cheese, serve and enjoy!
